As a part of my time as the marketing co-op student with Technical Safety BC, I wrote an article on RV safety and carbon monoxide poisoning prevention as part of a larger summer ad campaign. Learn more here!

As a part of the marketing team for safety regulator Technical Safety BC, much of our public-facing promotions on social media are public health-related. For the summertime, we had a campaign that aimed to inform our audience about the importance of carbon monoxide safety and poisoning prevention. Technical Safety BC was partnering with RV West Magazine for this campaign, and I wanted to utilize my long-form writing skills to create a promotional and informative article for this partnership.

My skills and process for this piece:

  • I worked with another member of the marketing team to compile data and stories of different RV incidents and accidents reported to our organization
  • I interviewed a certified gas safety officer to write this article about different incidents of accidents or poisoning in RVs and how to prevent them.
  • I outlined and wrote the article, incorporating quotes from the safety officer and providing context on previous incidents with the purpose of informing our audience of the potency of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning, and how to prevent RV incidents and CO poisoning

Learning Significance

  1. I had previously written other long-form pieces as part of magazines and publications, but this process taught me how writing an article works as a part of a larger organization’s marketing strategy. I also got a glimpse of how partnerships in promotional campaigns work, and the benefits and challenges in the context of larger organizations.
